Coming around

I took sick Boxing day,the day after Christmas but  I am coming around..I have been in the woods a few days the past week or so on skis. It has been a cold hard winter. January and February were hard enough without being sick. Snow, cold and wind with lots of power outages.Lord, we have never seen so much wind.

Spring brings hope.Still lots of snow here but it is going. Temps are creeping up. Hopes in sight. Life is not much without the little flutter of hope. Anyway hope to get in country a bit more the next few weeks with the strengthening sun. I have quite a bit of work to do to get into "woods walking shape"

Walking the hills last April. I like to walk the country to keep in shape for hunting. Have a lot of work to do this year

Short but good read. Traditional Bowhunting

I haven't been feeling 100% the last few weeks and haven't been in the woods so I have been doing a bit of reading.

I heard that Clay Hayes had a Kindle book out on Amazon.
Mr. Hayes is a real deal Trad Bowhunter who believes in the time honoured pursuit of game through woodsmanship and hard work. Many hunters have become too dependant on gadgetry and tear up the country on their atv's. Clay Hayes takes hunting back to what it should be.

I know guys here in Newfoundland saying they are going to take up moose hunting when they get an atv. You don't need a $45000 truck and an atv to hunt big game. If you are someone like Mr. Hayes you don't even need a rifle for hunting. You don't even to have to buy a bow. (he makes his own)

As I wrote on my Amazon review,

"Wonderful collection of essays and short stories about traditional bowhunting. If you are a hunter who loves the hunt for the sake of just being there, sensing everything, then you will love this book. Makes me want to hang up my rifle for the longbow."

If you are a woodsman you will appreciate this book

My father gave me his rifle

Marlin 336 in 30/30.
I have shot this rifle a bit over the years. I will use it for moose hunting hopefully in the future. The first moose I killed was with a .303 British. The first two moose I saw shot were shot with  a 30/30 they didn't go far. It is enough rifle if you are a hunter. The moose I shot in November was shot with a 30-06 but he was about 50 yards. This rifle was manufactured the same year I was born. It was probably the first center fire rifle I shot.

I am going to clean it up a little and maybe put a Lyman 66 sight on it. I like aperture sights.

Power gone

More than 50% of the people here on the island have lost power. It is not expected on for up to 24 hours. We lost ours early this morning. We are warm and cozy here. Being prepared pays off, also being lucky helps as well.

We have drifts in my yard quite deep. Winds steady 90 gusting 110 km/hour. No vis in drifting snow. Some folks are in hard shape.

Snow, snow ,snow

It has been snowing here now for a month. Blizzard conditions and warnings the past two days. Today it is supposed to warm up to -8c (18F) so thats a bit of a break. I don't mind the snow, I enjoy being out in the woods in it. Hunting, skiing, snowshoeing. I will be housebound for a while now though it seems because of complications of a respiratory infection. I hope I get a chance later to enjoy the snow.
