One more day then back inthe woods
I have been back to work a bit now but will be spending most of next week in the woods again grouse hunting if there is not too much snow. I am hoping to get my old Gordon out a bit if the snow gets no deeper. I will be hunting the woods rather than the open barren.Hope to have a few new pictures and am looking forward to the boil ups in the winter woods.I we get more snow I will be after the snowshoe hares. One way or the other if I am alive I will be in the woods.

Pup is coming along nicely
Jack is my young setter, he is just a year and a few months. He is steady on birds and has quite a nose. Duncan my old Gordon is retired from the barrens but I get him out on a woods road every now and again. Its pretty hard to see a dog that wants to go that just can't. I find much solace in the promise of a pup
I had a few more pics of Jack pointing but they came out very blurry. I am not much of a photographer i am afraid. I had a close up of this point that would have been nice but it came out blurry. It also cost me a bird.

Cleaning birds
I dry pluck all my birds unless they are badly shot up. I just finished doing a few . I can have the gut out of a moose or caribou in the time it takes to pluck 3 brace of birds. Plucked birds take the oven much better than skinned birds. We won't have a full moose the winter but we will have lots of birds and hopefully snowshoe hares as well.I should get a moose tag next year.

headed back out tomorrow
The last few times I have been hunting along the coast. Tomorrow I am headed up in country towards the wilderness area. This is the dirt road that leads to the area I was hunting last week.

After tomorrow I think I think I may stay home
for a day. Legs are getting tired. Thats a good complaint. Weather here is still dry great for bird hunting. We have had enough showers to get my well back

pup pointed 7 ptarmigan and
a cow and a calf moose. We were busting through some tamarack between one barren and the next when Jack pointed as I crashed through the brush a cow and calf moose got up just underfoot. Heart was a pumping. We have a few birds but the moose were left to wander off.

Not long home
After a day in the rain, I am eating fresh local caught cod with locally grown potatoes after having a good drink. It will be early to bed with another day on the country tomorrow. Will be taking the pup this time.

To be able to get out
For as long as you want, whenever you want if the weather and time suits you has to be the best feeling of freedom in this world. Well it is to me anyway. Being where you want to be,doing what you want to do is a special thing in this world. I am a rich man in the fall. I haven't been taking many pictures but I am savouring this time afield. The dogs are enjoying it as much or more than me. This is an old pic of my old retired Gordon "Dunc" My next setter will be a Gordon.
Pictured is the real world, many levels above the contrived, man made world. My ambition is to spend as much time outside as I possibly can

I had a bit of a job
to awake this morning. it was blowing a bit and I felt like sleeping in. It was a hard year. Pup though was eager to go, so we went. He was so eager that I had to tie him in lunch time when it was time to boil the kettle. Last year he was just a pup. He is well on his way to becoming a bird dog
Sam now is ready to go tomorrow. It will be his first day since the season opened

lived in this house 15 years
First time my well has gone dry. There are about 10 families here in this small community now without water. We have had a dry summer. One of the driest we have had for a while. Nothing forecast except for some light showers over the next week or so. The weather should be good for birdhunting though :)

Finally
It has been a slow start to the season for me for a number of reasons. The season has been open one week and I only got out yesterday for a few hours. My Gordon is retired now and Sam my older English setter had a leg injury. Sam is on the mend and should be hunting this week coming.
The good news is that there seems to be a few birds around.
The pup took up the slack yesterday

Soon
Every morning Orion rises a little earlier in the east. In five more days we shall be as free as birds for a couple of months. I love to gaze on Orion in the morning. Time to hunt.

Forecast is calling
for sustained winds of 100 km/h with gusts to 120 km/h (60 mph with gusts to 75 mph)
Leslie is going to move through pretty fast
This is the marine forecast for my area. I live right on this coast a couple hundred meters from the water. Going to be a windy morning.
This is no more though than we get every two weeks or so in the winter except for the rain. The rain is expected to mainly impact the island further west than here

Falls almost here
I have been busy at work the summer with no leave. I have spent a fair bit of time on, in and lately under the water. Two weeks more though, myself and my dogs will be free to roam.
Just south of my home on the coast trail

Strange people in the Cove
They are shooting a few scenes for a movie here in the the Cove right next to my house. They asked if they could use our home, dogs said no. Going to be a couple of late nights.
Apparently Newfoundland is pretty hot right now. A few Hollywood types have shown up around here lately and a couple of big homes have recently been built around here.
Hope they don't "DISCOVER" the place.
Probably going to move get a little further out in the future I think. I don't handle crowds well.

Iceberg ashore
40 degrees F at 655 pm dropping to 32 f and snow tonight. It was high 70's this weekend. We don't have much of a summer. I don't mind the cool the dogs love it. Every spring we have the bergs from the Arctic visit we also have had 3 polar bears and a wolf come ashore on the ice this spring. In one community this spring a family awoke to a polar bear coming into their house. The bear didn't get too far. It was a heavy ice year on this coast this year. I wish I had gotten a picture when the pack ice was in.

Long Gun registry final vote tonight
The Long gun registry in Canada is expected to die tonight. Long fight but this proves that the ever tightening ratchet of gun control can be slackened. This is the final step for the elimination of the requirement for registration of rifles and shotguns here in Canada. This is the first step for Canadians who value freedom. There seems to be a few more of us than previously thought.
The antis are gnashing their teeth tonight here in Canada. It was all about social engineering anyway.

No moose
First time for a long time. I waited too late. Chasing birds with the dogs. Ice locked me out of the back country where its a sure thing. Quads and snowmobile would have opened up the back country but I don't like machines in the woods. Hares and eider ducks are next on the menu. A child should be able to kill a moose around here.Next time moose comes before the birds
